Hélène d' Andlau (1919-2020) Etching on 8/100 paper. "The Mountain" 1962 Signed lower right. Sculptor, engraver and photographer. A member of the French Resistance and Knight of the Legion of Honor, the Countess moved to the commune in 1976. Hélène d'Andlau died on Tuesday June 16, aged 101. A Rémalard resident since 1976, she became a key figure in the life of the Percheron town by creating the garden of La Petite Rochelle, a magnificent place open to the public, where she gardened until the age of 97. A member of the Resistance during the Second World War, she was a Knight of the Legion of Honor. The Countess d'Andlau was a curious, passionate woman. She studied drawing and sculpture, practiced engraving, wrote for an English magazine, learned Hebrew and traveled extensively. She was also deeply involved in humanitarian and social causes, and her faith was a pillar of her life. Conquered by gardening and botany, she said of her green haven: "A garden like this is an antidote to aging.
