Bruno SCHIEPAN - Lot 20
Bruno SCHIEPAN "Ceci n'est pas (8)" (This is not (8)) 20.5 x 29 x 1.5 cm Acrylic on PS choc, 2022. Of all Bruno Schiepan's creations, his mobiles are the crowning achievement. His first opportunity to create one came when Knoll France asked him to create an installation for the reopening of its showroom in Paris. Bruno Schiepan had already been working with Knoll for several years on Eero Saarinen's iconic "tulip" line, which he considered both a sculpture and an ideal support for his painting. He has created and continues to paint Saarinen chairs, armchairs and tables. Each piece is unique, hand-painted with a brush, turning the "tulip" into a new flower... For the Knoll project, Bruno Schiepan imagined that, by cutting up Saarinen's Tulip chairs and armchairs and literally tearing them to pieces, he would make their primary function - sitting - disappear, reinventing them in a new, unused form: the mobile. This new creation was like a revelation, a synthesis of all Bruno Schiepan's aspirations. The very definition of a mobile is one of balance, a fragile equilibrium that constantly recomposes itself. The search for balance in form, volume and color is at the heart of Bruno Schiepan's approach. A great admirer of Calder's work, his only ambition in venturing into his territory was to attempt to enrich it. Cutting out Saarinen's armchairs opened up a first avenue for him: where Calder works with flat surfaces, all his pieces are in volume. This is not a detail. Depending on the angle of vision, shapes can take on (or not) meaning. The cutting of shapes is often a source of surprise, with birds appearing, for example. Volumes also clearly reinforce the role of light: moving shadows are created... Finally, volume opens up astonishing perspectives when it comes to painting. This is the third singularity of Bruno Schiepan's work: a real paint job that further enhances the magical, spectacular aspect of the mobiles. Painting allows us to create correspondences between pieces, to suggest unexpected perspectives, to break up shapes or create new ones... Bruno Schiepan's approach to mobiles revolves around a few simple ideas: - Use an iconic piece of design to tell a new story - Create shapes from other shapes, - Consider volumes as surfaces. https://www.schiepan.com/ This lot has been offered by the artist.
